Anyone who has tried to quit smoking knows that it is hard. Even those who have succeeded do not claim that it was easy, and so many of them relapse and slip back to their old tobacco habit within a few weeks or months. The symptoms of nicotine withdrawal are real and so it is not surprising that many people question whether the”talking cure” that is hypnosis can really help them quit smoking. Yet there is ample evidence to show that many people have found that hypnosis was the answer to their problem and to understand why this is so we need to look at what hypnosis is.
Hypnosis has been defined as a state of focused attention. There are many misconceptions about hypnosis such as that it is a form of mind control that can be exerted against your will. In fact nothing could be further from the truth. You have to agree to be hypnotised for the process to be successful. The experience has been described as being in a light trance. You experience this state every time that you visit the cinema and are “taken out of yourself” by a gripping film or when you “lose” yourself in a good book.
Giving up smoking involves three elements, the decision to quit, nicotine withdrawal symptoms and the habits associated with cigarettes and tobacco. The first of these, making the decision to quit, is the most important and without this no form of treatment whether it is hypnosis or nicotine replacement therapy with pills or patches will have any chance of success. Many people have a love hate relationship with their smoking habit in that it both gives them pleasure but at the same time they would like to give it up. An approach of “I’d really like to quit, but it would be nice to have the odd cigarette now an again” is a recipe for failure. You need to decide to quit once and for all before hypnosis can help.
Psychology teaches us that many of our day to day actions are governed by our subconscious mind where long held habits and attitudes are hidden from our conscious minds. In our normal waking state we cannot contact our subconscious mind, but under hypnosis the practitioner can do so. He can implant suggestions to change our mindset to that of a person who no longer smokes. Positive suggestions can also help with the nicotine addiction which has a far larger mental component than is generally realized.
There are many ways that people attempt to quit smoking and no one way will suit everyone. Having said that, the one essential element is a clear decision to quit. Provided that decision has been made hypnosis can supply the subconscious changes that will ensure success.
