Trout Fishing Tips For The Average Angler

It seems to me that almost all trout anglers are looking for tips to help them catch more trout. In this article, I’m going to reveal some trout fishing tips for the average angler. None of these tips are rocket science, in fact most of them are simple. They were taught to me more than 20 years ago by the best trout fisherman I’ve ever known. He was the father of my best friend and he was quite a trout fisherman. As a matter of fact he caught trophy trout out of rivers and streams that other people didn’t think that trout that size lived in. When I refer to trophy trout, I’m referring to trout that were (and are) over twenty two inches long. When it comes to small rovers and streams, trout this size are trophies, at least in my book. In any case, these tips were used by him to help him catch large trout in areas that most people thought didn’t hold large trout.

  • Use Ultra Light Gear - What do I mean by ultra light gear? JRW (the man I was referring to) believed in using ultra light rods and reels and four pound test monofilament line for all of his small river and stream fishing, especially for trout. This is the gear I’ve personally been using since he taught me more than 20 years ago, but I’ve also realized in that time that six pound test is also passable. Although four pound test is ideal, six pound can be substituted if you’re not comfortable with four pound test. The ultra light weight rods and reels are a must though.
  • Pay Attention To Your Hands - This might sound a bit strange, but JRW swore that it was true, and I’ve found out from experience, that he was exactly right. Any unnatural scents that are on your hands will transfer to whatever bait you’re using and can cost you bites. You see, trout have very a very sensitive sense of smell and if they smell something unnatural they are much less apt to bite. A great trout fishing tip for any angler is to grab a handful of grass or dirt before baiting up and rub it in your hands. This will eliminate any unnatural odors that may be on your hands.
  • Fish At The Right Times - Pay attention to both the weather and moon before you go fishing. Very few things will effect your catch rates as much as what the weather and/or moon are doing. I swear to God, this is true. That’s why getting your fingers on a Weather & Moon Report such as this is key to your success. You want to be trying to catch trout (and any other fish) when they are most active. They are much more active at certain times and much of that activity revolves around what the weather and moon are doing.
  • Always Use Gang Hooks - JRW swore by the use of gang hooks any time live bait was being used. Especially when fishing for trout with live worms. One of the best trout fishing tips that I’ve ever come in contact with is the use of a set of pre-tied gang hooks for fishing with live worms. You see, gang hooks enable the average angler to present live bait (and especially live worms) in a totally natural manner. This tip will pay huge dividends in the number and size of the trout that you catch. I’ve personally been using gang hooks for more than 20 years and can’t even imagine fishing with live bait without gang hooks.

The bottom line is that these trout fishing tips will help any angler catch more trout. Whether you employ one or all of these tips is obviously up to you, but I know they’ve all help me become a much better trout angler. JRW is no longer a part of this level of existence, but that doesn’t change the fact that I’m glad he passed these tips onto me before leaving, because he was the greatest trout angler that I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing.
