One of the biggest myths about abdominal exercise is that spot training exercises will burn fat off of the abs. The truth of the matter is that if you want to develop a six pack, you will strengthen your abs by doing abdominal exercise but you probably will not be burning any of the underlying fat off of your body. The only way to truly burn off the fat that is on the stomach is to eat a low calorie diet, do strength training and cardio work. Even then, you may not truly ever burn off all of the fat that is there.
Another myth surrounding abdominal exercise is the more repetitions you can do the better. Many people do a hundred or more abdominal exercise repetitions. This truly is not necessary. Abdominal muscles are no different than any other muscle in your body.
No one would do hundreds of bicep curls! There is no need to stress out the abdominal muscles by doing a ton of repetitions. If you can easily do a hundred repetitions of an abdominal exercise and you do not feel the burn, your technique may be wrong or you may need to add a different type of abdominal exercise into the mix.
Make sure you are working the transverse abdominis, rectus abdominis and the obliques. Think about purchasing an exercise ball. I guarantee you that abdominal exercise with a ball will take your workout to the next level and you will have no need for a hundred repetitions.
Another thing that people who are trying to get flat abs have fallen victim to is that they think that they must do an abdominal exercise every day. You should have a day of rest in between workouts. This will give your abs a day to recover before you put them under pressure again.
The biggest obstacle for many people is that they truly believe that getting a lean stomach and six pack abs is possible for every person. Yet, the truth is that some people will never obtain this goal, no matter how hard they try or how much body fat they lose.
The simple fact is the body fat level that would be required for certain people to have perfect six pack abs would just be too low for them to stay healthy. This does not mean that you should throw in the towel and never do ab exercise again.
On the contrary, continue to work your abs, just set more realistic goals for yourself. Once you let the load of striving for six pack abs go you will probably feel a tremendous relief. In fact, it will probably free you up to be able to focus on the things about your physic that you can change.
Once you understand that spot training alone will not remove abdominal fat, that you should not do hundreds of repetitions of an abdominal exercise, that you should try new exercises that will give your abs a workout and that you should space your abdominal exercise workouts a day apart — you will be on your way to having the flattest stomach that you can have.
It may not be that six pack that you are dreaming of, but it can be the best that your body can give you. Who wouldn’t be happy with that?
The fact is if you are reading this you are probably a very health conscious individual who is closer to obtaining their goals than people who are sitting at home and eating M&Ms and leading sedentary lifestyles. So, give yourself a break and give yourself credit for what you have accomplished with your abdominal exercise program.
Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t have abs like Schwarzenegger. He’s Schwarzenegger!
