Breast milk is believed to be the best form of nourishment for neonates and infants. The properties of human milk facilitate the transition of life from in utero to ex utero. Both the World Health Organization ( WHO ) and the Yankee Academy of Pediatrics ( AAP ) recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life and then breastfeeding up to two years or more ( WHO ) or one year of breastfeeding in total ( AAP ). Exclusive breastfeeding for the 1st half a year of life “provides continuing protection against diarrhea and breathing tract infection” that are more common in babies fed formula. The WHO and AAP both stress the value of breastfeeding for mummies and kids. While spotting the superiority of breastfeeding, controlling authorities also work to reduce the risks of artificial feeding.
Breastfeeding is a cheap way of feeding an infant, and supplies the best nourishment for a child at a small nutrient cost to the ma. Frequent and exclusive breastfeeding can delay the return of fertility thru lactational amenorrhea, though breastfeeding is an imperfect means of birth control. During breastfeeding profitable hormones are released into the ma's body and the motherly bond can be fortified. Breastfeeding is possible throughout pregnancy, but often milk production will be reduced at some point.
Breastfeeding releases oxytocin and prolactin, hormones that relax the mother and make her feel more nurturing toward her baby. Breastfeeding soon after giving birth increases the ma's oxytocin levels, making her uterus contract more quickly and reducing bleeding. Oxytocin is equivalent to pitocin, a manmade hormone used to make the uterus contract.
