A panic attack embodies an abrupt rush of disconcerting physical symptoms, wedded to thoughts of impending ruin; this may create symptoms such as making a scene, having a heart attack, or not being able to breathe. While your first panic attack may have a distinct trigger, further episodes can be unpredictable in terms of time or space.

A true panic attack includes actual physical distress in the form of fast heartbeat, shortness of breath, a confused state, faintness or lack of concentration. Not all of these symptoms need be present to represent a panic attack. Once someone has had several panic attacks they may become fearful that this will overtake their life.
